Why do people build their own golf cart?

This is a simple question with a simple answer - because we all like different things and use these things for different reasons. Creating something completely customized to your wants and needs is the ultimate comfort. Choosing the perfect color, type of tires, and sound system upgrades are just a small portion of the options. Another reason one might go down this path is because they want a one-of-a-kind cart. There are custom carts that look like mini race cars, miniature limos, and Jeeps. While these aren’t traditional styles they are a great option for those of you who don’t care what people think and want to turn some heads.

Where to start

If you are a visual or audio learner, Youtube will be your best friend. Plan on watching a bunch of videos before you even get started. Check out the YouTube channel called, DIY Golf Cart, this channel is devoted to showing folks how to build and repair carts. After you’ve identified which projects you can handle you’ll need to order the accessories or parts you need. If you plan on building your cart from scratch be prepared to devote much more time to this project.  Some basic tools and parts you’ll want to secure before you get started are: a hard ruler, various sized wrenches, screwdriver, motorcycle or lawnmower motor, and a power converter or centrifugal clutch.

Insure you are picking the best product for your money

Time and money are the main objections in most situations, there is no difference with your DIY project. By now you should have decided if this is still something you want to start. If you answered yes, ask yourself do you have the time to complete this project from start to finish? Or is your schedule telling you that you’ll probably be storing a half built cart in your garage for the next 10 months? If time isn’t an objection for you, that's great! Now it’s time to be honest about your skill level. You may have the time but not necessarily the skill it takes to problem solve and take direction. If that sounds like you then a DIY custom golf cart kit might not be the way to go for you.

Finally, you should always remember what your ultimate goal is with your cart. If you plan to be on the road or course right away, you are better off paying the extra money and buying an already-built cart. However, if you are ready to get your hands dirty then a DIY custom golf cart is the perfect project for you.
